چکیده

A strong coupling standing wave, interacting with three-level L-type ~or ladder-type! atoms, can diffract a weak probe field ~propagating along a direction normal to the standing wave! into high-order diffractions, a phenomenon which we name electromagnetically induced grating ~EIG!. We develop in this work a theory for studying EIG in a homogeneously broadened medium consisting of three-level L-type atoms. We show that by taking advantage of the absorption and dispersion properties of electromagnetically induced transparency one can create an atomic grating that can effectively diffract light into the first-order direction. @S1050-2947~98!03902-X#

Stoppage of Light Made Flexible by an Additional Control Field

We show how the application of a coupling field connecting the two lower metastable states of a Lambda system facilitates stoppage of light in a coherently driven Doppler broadened atomic medium via electromagnetically induced transparency.

Single photon quantum non-demolition in the presence of inhomogeneous broadening

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been often proposed for generating nonlinear optical effects at the single photon level; in particular, as a means to effect a quantum non-demolition measurement of a single photon field. Previous treatments have usually considered homogeneously broadened samples, but realisations in any medium will have to contend with inhomogeneous broadening...

Observation of intracavity electromagnetically induced transparency and polariton resonances in a Doppler-broadened medium.

The transmission spectrum of three-level atoms in a vapor cell inside an optical cavity shows distinct peaks associated with atom-cavity polaritons in the system. We develop the theory of these resonances in a Doppler-broadened medium and present the results of experimental observations of these spectra in three-level Lambda-type rubidium atoms inside an optical ring cavity.

Active Mode Locking With Hybrid Lasers

We present the results of a numerical study of active mode locking with hybrid lasers which contain an inhomogeneously broadened laser medium and a homogeneously broadened laser medium. The spectral, pulse, and gain characteristics of actively mode-locked hybrid lasers and the influence of the unsaturated gain, the saturation power, and the homogeneous linewidth on the pulse coherence and bandw...

Controlling of Absorption and Dispersion Spectrum via Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

In this paper we examine the absorption and dispersion properties of a weak probe field via Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in a four-level system. It is shown that under certain condition, using this model, the absorption cancellation is appeared and the medium becomes transparent to the weak probe field. It will be shown that the controlling of absorption and dispersion spectru...
